8K a year GENERAL FUNCTION:
The blaster/painter is responsible for blasting/painting components, equipment, interiors and exteriors of vessels using blasting equipment, spray guns, brushes and rollers.
Uses abrasive material to blast and solvents to wash surfaces to remove grease, rust scale and dirt.
Washes and treats surface with turpentine and other preparations.
Mixes batches of paint, varnish and stain.
Operates spray-painting equipment and brushes or rolls paint on surfaces.
Abrades surfaces of metal or hard-composition objects to remove adhering scale, sand, paint, grease, tar, rust and dirt, and to impart specified finish.
Masks specified areas of object to protect from abrading action or over spray.
May examine finished surfaces to ensure conformance to specifications.

Responsibilities:
Prepare surface for painting by using solvents.
Mixes primer or paints to be applied to surfaces.
Applies paint using spray guns, rollers or brushes according to specifications.
Maintains equipment after use by properly cleaning and storing.
Turns valves on equipment to regulate pressure and composition of abrasive mixture flowing through nozzle.
Starts equipment that directs blast or flow of abrasive-laden compressed air over surface of parts.
Manually directs nozzle over surface of large parts.
DESIRED KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS & ABILITIES:
Knowledge of the various types of spray guns, their use in application of paint and maintenance of them.
Knowledge of various blasting and painting products and their application.
Knowledge of blasting and spraying techniques utilized within the industry.
Knowledge of safety requirements used in spray painting.
DESIRABLE EXPERIENCE & TRAINING:
Prior blasting/painting experience in a heavy industrial or shipbuilding environment is preferred.

Estimated Salary: $20 to $28 per hour based on qualifications.
